"To keep our hearts open is probably the most urgent
responsibility you have as you get older."
Leonard Cohen
As we age, exposure to inhuman actions becomes more apparent. Even if combatant posturing is not personal, we can be easily pulled in. The sense of being dominated can cause us to weaken, allowing manipulation to prevail. It is imperative to remember that we have choices as to how we react to any given situation.
It is difficult to stand back while watching someone we love failing to address issues. The same can be true of violence against animals or nature. Observing negative treatment of children can upset us to the point of illness. We must not shut our hearts, however, as an attempt to avoid the horrors of the world.
It is through connection with others that doors open and hearts heal. It is with selected exposure that we remain connected. What choice is made as connection needs to be aligned with personal preference. Whether we choose gardening, volunteering, or nature loving, taking careful action will increase our sense of beauty and belonging.
