"Everybody talks, but there is no conversation."
Dejan Stojanovic
Communication involves more than heightened listening skills and perfection with articulation. Positioning of the body, and the body language itself reflects deeper understanding and additional information. A person's eye contact, the way they hold their arms, or a rigid stance offers unspoken details.
Maintain eye contact, do not be scoping out the room or glancing at a phone. Stand at a normal space so a person does not feel threatened by being too close nor not too far which gives the sense of disinterest. Clutching our hands or crossing our arms shows resistance. Pay attention, do not let the mind wander to a forthcoming response.
When we are engaged in a passionate subject, it is hard to not blurt out additional information laced with our enthusiasm. It is respectful to take turns in exchanging. If the speaker does not offer lapses for input, one might examine the basis for the one-sided conversation. Notice if anything resonates within.
