The Act of Grounding

"Accidents are the body's mechanism
for getting our attention.
Whether it is a car accident, sports injury,
or we trip headlong into a wall,
it is an indication that we are not really in our bodies,
that something has taken our focus away.
Accidents slam us back into reality, sometimes literally.
It's the way our bodies and the universe say,
"Hey, pay attention! You're important!"

Accidents of any kind are a sign that we are not paying attention.  Maybe we are day dreaming, struggling with emotion, or simply tired, but we are not focused.  We are going too fast and need to be slowed down, or we are to distracted and need to be alert.  We are not in the present moment navigating the life present before us.

The word 'grounding' used here is a term referring to connecting with the earth, feeling its energy, while pulling down energy from the Divine.  By balancing these energies in our bodies, we feel connected to all things.  Some people feel calm or peace while others experience Divine presence.  No matter what we experience through grounding, there is a means of feeling whole.

There are many other forms of 'grounding':  some people stand on the ground barefooted;  others stand in a shower letting water comfort and cleanse; and  there are those who meditate or pray.  The form a person uses is not as important as actually taking a few minutes to ground ourselves.

So this is fine for in the morning, but what about in the midst of a crazy day?  Even if we are stalled at a stop light, we can momentarily close our eyes and visualize the act of grounding in our minds, seeing it like a photo or video.  This of course is a short version, a blink of an eye thing, but the results can be just as powerful.

It is good to ground our selves any time, but bedtime is important as grounding energetically pulls us back together, releasing fear or apprehension.  If we crawl into bed and realize too late that we have forgotten to ground our selves, no problem.  In bed, we can ground our selves through visualization from head to toe, toe to head, until we feel relaxed and ready for a good night's sleep.

When we are grounded in our bodies, we are far more alert and less likely to misunderstand conversations, get stuck in emotion, or be distracted from the beauty of the life surrounding us.  Grounding can take as long or as short as time allows.  Just make the gesture and notice how much more present we are in our day!

Mothers and Children

"Our initial connection to life comes solely through the mother.  She is the one who provides assurance of survival --- or not.  She is the one who transmits and confers our most basic right to be loved and to give love --- or not.

Mother could only love, approve of, and appreciate me to the degree that she could love, approve of, and appreciate herself.  She was not capable of that because  she did not love the feminine part or herself."

We are not always loved in the manner in which we would like.  Sometimes we have to embrace how love is offered to us, as long as it is healthy.  Hopefully we will understand in time, the lack of love is not a judgment of our selves, but the inability  of the giver.   Not all of us have had inspirational female role models and not all of us have had children of our own.  The mother - child relationship, however, can be duplicated in a number of healthy ways.

In some instances, a grandmother or favorite aunt may step in offering unconditional love.  There may be a teacher who takes a special interest in us and encourages us in a personal way.  As we grow older, we become more aware of accomplished women who can inspire us.  Role models are prolific ... professors, doctors, authors, poets, painters, actresses, dancers, and singers.  In researching such role models, we learn most people have had enormous struggles to get where they have finally arrived --- or not.

"I don't remember who said this, but there really are places in the heart you don't even know exist until you love a child.”  This is a quote from Anne Lamott.  It is a misconception to believe only mothers can love their children.  Anyone can love a child, and love them deeply.  There are teachers, mentors, and professionals who love children with a passion to instill self-worth, healing and personal integrity.

If you have not had a child of your own, you can do more with your energy than trying to fill this void.  There are so many children in our neighborhoods, schools, and families needing attention.  Volunteers are needed in schools, hospitals, and non-profit organizations like Big Sister Programs.  These kinds of relationships can fill our hearts if we allow it to happen --- or not.

So on this Mother's Day, I honor all of you who have given so generously from your heart.  It doesn't matter if you have been a grandmother, aunt, teacher, volunteer, professional or neighborhood mom, I honor the graciousness of your kind deeds.  I also honor all of the children who allowed themselves to heal through the experience of love.

Endless gratitude for compassionate love shared with children no matter their religion, color, or creed.  Equally, deep appreciation is extended to the children who have loved back in return by embracing an elder of any means.  Today we can celebrate the love for each other and the healing compassion unfolding in our hearts.

Deleted Files

The truth is a force of such magnitude that it demands to be known one way or another.
If buried, the truth will push its way to the surface.  Denial or suppression of the truth will manifest as ill health, dysfunctional relationships or financial problems.  The truth does not remain silenced or suppressed comfortably.  It may take a lifetime, but the truth will win out.

 TRUTH HEALS

Our minds are like master computers.  They record information regarding people, places, and things.  Our personal computer is our Secret Keeper recording and repressing.  We have special files we store information in, the inbox for current thoughts, and the delete button to get rid of what is no longer useful.  As in all computers, however, deleted files can be reclaimed if we know what we are doing or secure a person who knows how to guide us through the process.

We take our unpleasant experiences and store them in a file.  Each time we open the file, we can review and heal just a little bit more to the point of eventually eliminating the file all together.  It no longer serves any purpose and is just taking up valuable space.

Repressing information is much different.  When we repress something, it means not looking at it, not coming to understand the relevance and not healing.  We do not comprehend the importance of this information and it impede our mental health.

When we hide something from our present state of mind, it gets dumped into the physical body.  We will carry it in the form of a headache or stomachache, even to the point of a more serious physical illness.  We are so uncomfortable with the information it creates a "dis-ease".

Continued repression of issues we have not dealt with, impacts our mind, then our body, and then our spirit.  The flow of our natural spirit is impaired and we become depressed.  In this depression we may continue to remain in denial about whatever is buried deep within us.

Repressed memories will not surface until we are ready to deal with them.  Sometimes they float to the surface, but we may not be ready so once again we push them down, even unknowingly.  We may realize something is nagging at us but we can't quite put our finger on it.  There seems to be something just under the surface and we cannot identify it.

Repressed incidents can be released through a random fragrance, touch, physical location,  passing remark or a dream.  In fact, when something originally happens and we repress it, it may resurface in a dream.  If we ignore the dream, it may resurface again in a form of a nightmare.  If we continue to ignore these incidents, the ignored issue will be repressed from the mental into the physical.

So the button on the keyboard, "escape" is really too convenient for us to use.  We think by just clearing the document we will be fine and this is not true.  The longer our deleted information is repressed, and the virus is ignored, the damage grows greater.

The broken spirit eventually wears out or we can say our computer crashes.  Reclaiming our lost or deleted document requires outside help ... a technician of sorts.  We can reach out to a trusted friend, minister, life coach or minister.  Admittedly, this can be a long process requiring patience, diligence, and forgiveness.   With the elimination of so many old files, one may want to downsize to an iPad or just an iPhone requiring future years of learning all of the new aps! In the end, however, we will feel liberated with the sense of advanced programing.
