My Oldest Friends

"I think books are like people, in the sense
that they'll turn up in your life
when you most need them."
Emma Thompson

Libraries have always been a place of comfort for me. I could browse for hours, getting lost in both time and subject matter. The same holds true of used bookstores. I could wander indefinitely. Browsing, I come across old favorites of mine, and it is so similar to the experience of running into an old friend.

My favorite authors are as diverse as my confidantes. I am selective and particular as I intrust my absolute attention into their writings. I become a silent observer as I fall into the story line totally enthralled. If there isn't an instant rapport, however, I easily select a different read as there are so many waiting to be explored.

Reading a book can be both encouraging and healing. When we are careful in our selection of subject matter, we can discover new methods of thinking, being, and doing. Wisdom seeps through the author's words if we but pay attention. With the turning of each page, comfort and renewal reaches out to our souls.
