Chasing Butterflies

"Happiness is like a butterfly which,
when pursued, is always beyond grasp,
but, if you will sit down quietly,
may alight upon you."
Nathaniel Hawthorne

Chasing butterflies can turn into aggressive behavior if we are not successful in our determination to grasp what we think is ours.   As we snatch at the wings are we admiring the beauty and elegance of this delicate creature?  Once captured, how respectful are we while watching it slowly die?

We do the same in relationships.  We chase what is not meant to be, and extend ourselves beyond what is healthy.  Winning becomes the motivation which overrides the appreciation for the beauty that was first seen.

Capture stifles the spirit and prevents future blessings.  If we stop chasing, be patient and wait, we can be surprised by what comes our way.  When we are sitting still, we can unknowingly attract a gentle butterfly.   We will know when we feel the delicate wings brush against our heart.
