"One of the advantages of being disorganized is that
one is always having surprising discoveries.”
A.A. Milne
Life returns to routine as the holidays have come to a close. The house gets straightened as decorations are packed away for yet another year. The house may even appear to be dull without all of the extra trimmings. I resort to lighting candles to create a sense of warmth.
As I do the laundry, I find myself wishing I could cleanse my feelings as easily as jumping into a washing machine. Rather than processing what I feel, I guess I would rather there be another way ... and of course there is ... drugs, foods, alcohol, exercises and various other addictions. As I remove the fresh smelling sheets from the dryer, I realize a sock has gone missing. It reminds me of how I often forget or lose parts of myself, given over to negative thinking. As I spread the laundered sheet upon the bed, I discover one of the socks clinging inside. I retrieve the sock, somehow knowing I, too, must retrieve the parts of myself that are still hiding from me.
The let down after the holidays can be a definite time of adjustment. Perhaps we feel the heaviness of whatever didn't come to materialize or the events that did. Disappointments can be so discouraging in spite of the things that did go well.
We need to remind ourselves that it is a new year, destined for new experiences and opportunities. We must pick our selves up, dust the mind off, and begin to create the joy of creating a New Year. Begin to paint pictures in our minds, switching colors from angry reds to delicate shades of lavender. Paint many sun rises feeling the warmth on our faces. Sketch the sun setting with a sense of gratitude for another day well spent.
Our minds are endlessly creative, if we but choose to use them with doses of imagination and permission to be expressive. It is a New Year ... will it be a repeat of 2013 or will we guide our selves to a more fulfilling life. We get to choose.
