Finding Our Treasures
As humans, we look at things and think about what we've looked at. We treasure it is a kind of private art gallery. ~ Thom Gunn
As children, we might define treasure as a newly discovered shell on a sandy beach or as a vision of a pirate chest filled with golden coins. As we age, our definition expands and contracts frequently: a great blouse at a reduced price, a battered old car when you are 16, a dinky apartment in college, a perfect job or a special loved one. When we have ear marked investment money, we may find treasures perhaps from the art world or stock markets or real estate opportunities. Then we come upon still another age being overwhelmed by all accumulations and down sizing seems to be the heart's desire.
The real treasures, however, are the ones we hold dear in our hearts ... memories. Memories can be little snapshots from time honored family gatherings or the day a puppy strayed into the yard. The snapshot can be of the family porch swing or an old white wicker rocker. The treasure could be a verbal exchange or a mental picture of the sun sinking into the horizon or the first shooting star we viewed falling from the sky. Some of our very best treasures, unfortunately, have been buried too deeply within just waiting to be discovered again.
We need to spend some time in our personal art galleries. We brighten our spirits by reconnecting with the treasures discovered while traveling this road called life. We too easily forget the treasures we behold.
