"MAY WE THINK OF FREEDOM,
NOT AS THE RIGHT TO DO AS WE PLEASE,
BUT AS THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT."
PETER MARSHALL
The American Flag tends to become more meaningful to me every year. Watching it billow in the wind with such grace and dignity somehow touches my heart. It stirs memories of celebrations, festivals, losses, and wars.
This symbol, the American Flag, has detailed meaning for a variety of people. The definition, however, changes from generation to generation and person to person. Old Glory has triggered discussions remolding what, where, and how the flag should be.
I hear the words, "Let freedom ring," and the sounds of war are captured in the background. The second waving of the flag creates sorrow in the loss of high school and college friends who were killed in Vietnam. The fear of my boys being called to serve is deeply embedded in me. We believe we should serve our country, while those in power tend to be driven with cravings for greed and control. I wonder how long the flag will be free to fly and how skillful the definition will be edited.
