"When faced with a decision,
choose the path that feeds your soul."
~ Dorothy Mendoza Row
During this month, we seem to be focused on what others want or need. The busy season impacts our routines, eating habits, and sleeping schedules. All these lapses impact our immune system. We find ourselves in more situations with large crowds of people either at school musicals or shopping with the masses. So we are more exposed than usual and probably more vulnerable.
There is great importance in taking time for nurturing and nourishing our individual selves. We are not being selfish as if we are not in peak performance mode, we let other people down and the cycle of decline continues.
Try to meet personal needs prior to becoming exhausted. Each day, choose fifteen minutes just for pampering. Whether we choose a cup of hot tea after everyone has gone to bed or if we get up earlier to welcome the day. There are many daily affirmations available to us that might just keep the day buoyant.
My personal favorite of course is lighting a candle. When I was still working, I would light a candle every morning in the bathroom while I showered and dressed. (If a person uses a tealight there is no concern trying to remember if the candle was extinquished or not.) Each day I could call in spiritual guidance or strength or immunity to illness. Sometimes I lit the candle just to celebrate life or my family. It was an honoring ceremony for each morning, to start my day with light.
A neighbor strikes a match and lights a candle as she begins the evening meal. She feels the flame clear away the heaviness of her day. She can prepare the meal with a kinder heart and sets a better mood for her family.
A dear sister of my heart lights a tealight while she prepares for bed, being thankful and mindful of what the day has presented to her. She says it puts her in a better mood as she heads to bed.
Take a few minutes and create a small gesture that will nurture the soul. If we put our mind to it, we can design a few moments that can impact the total response to our day. Come on, we can do this. It is not about deserving, it is about connecting with all that is holy.
