Gnarly ...

"Gnarly burls and misshapen limbs speak of injuries and obstacles
encountered through time and overcome."
Peter Levine

When a tree is damaged, the wounds heal as they are covered over by new growth. The misshapen limbs reflect these injuries. Upon close inspection, one notices the irregularities in both root and bark formations. Trunk, twigs, and branches all contribute to the unique presence wherever they happen to grow.

Life does not protect us from our wounding. We all carry scars whether upon our skin or heart. Physically, they may heal reasonably fast, but emotionally, restoration may take unlimited or recurring time. Through spiritual beliefs, we eventually view our injuries as lessons that contribute to our uniqueness.

The image of a tree can be encouraging as it displays a sturdiness, in spite of damages from the human hand or harshness of nature. We can begin to appreciate individualized character and endless beauty. Trees pass through seasons of life, just as we do. It is through this process that we learn to embrace our personal beauty.
