"Better to build a bridge than a wall."
Elton John
When we build a bridge, we know there is the possibility of returning whether referring to a country road, relationship, or life itself. A bridge offers us flexibility and just knowing we can have the option of revisiting can be powerful in itself. A wall, however, is far more permanent limiting both mental and physical boundaries.
For many years while I was still in social services, I found myself often times troubled by decisions I needed to make. Whether the results impacted my family or the families I served, I would invariably find myself standing in the middle of a bridge at a familiar park.
I would stand on this bridge watching water spurt from a fountain representing new ideas and the need to flow. I would remain on the bridge until I came upon resolution. In my heart, I always knew that I could return to this bridge to revisit my decisions. There was comfort in knowing I could return and not be barricaded by a wall preventing the possibility of change.
