One set of grandparents traveled to America from Sweden, while the other set made their way to America from Bohemia. Both sets of grandparents spoke their native languages. It is a great loss to me that I never learned to speak with either foreign tongue, even though my parents were fluent.
Through the prejudices of my father, I gathered that to be a "Bohunk" was just as bad as being Irish or Polish ... not all of us could be a blonde Swede. My sister favored our Swedish side by being blonde while I was short, stocky, and dark reflecting the 'gypsy' side.
What others deemed as negative personality traits, I tended to develop with enhancement and creativity. My interests were drawn to storytelling and writing; participation in arts; wandering freely; individualistic clothing; candle lighting with perceptions; and colorful dreaming. My heritage granted me permission to search for the unique me and to unfold unscathed by society.
