Pregnant Pause

"Somehow the silence seemed to connect us
in a way like words never could."

Wendelin Van Draanen

A pregnant pause can speak a thousand words.  Whether facilitated in therapy, committee meetings, or in the midst of medical diagnosis, silence can deliver unmistakable information.  The silent pause breaks through our disorganized thinking, and births reality that is hard to miss.

A simple pause can touch a wounded heart more poignantly than a well rehearsed verse.  The silence allows truth to untangle and gently hone down to our core.  In this quiet space of time, we are able to decipher unspoken emotions into compassionate understanding.

We often times forget communication is so much more than words.  Our facial expressions can announce our news prior to an announcement.  Our body language can alert others  to the depth of sorrow without a word being spoken.  We reflect our own inner conflict by loudly responding, "Yes," even though we are shaking our heads no.

A pregnant pause can be as swift as a pointed arrow.  It can pierce our hearts and minds with either joy or sorrow.  When we are in an awkward situation, perhaps more words can be spoken if we say nothing at all.
