"I paint flowers so that they will not die."
Frida Kahlo
There was a small sign on the green way that said, "If you love flowers, do not pick, let them live." This may be the first year that I do not pick a flower to bring home as I walk through nature. I used to justify my actions as I only selected one, not even close to a bouquet. Now I hold my yearning at bay.
This seems to be an on going lesson for me. Like when I wander the bakery aisle viewing delicious sweet treats, I try to enjoy the fragrance without purchasing a single one. This is the same restraint learned with the flowers. This discipline spilled over into relationships as well. Where I once interjected my wisdom, I simply learned to be present.
This change in behavior originally seemed like a deprivation, but it actually offered a new reward. My eyes would capture a present moment and instead of clutching at it, I would allow the initial beauty to wash over me. With a willingness to let go, an element of peace gathers ... like a painted picture worth a thousand words.
