Magical Pockets of Time

“Time can do all sorts of things. It’s almost like a magician. It can turn autumn into spring and babies into children, seeds into flowers and tadpoles into frogs, caterpillars into cocoons, and cocoons into butterflies. And life into death. There’s nothing that time can’t do. Except run backwards. That’s its trouble really, it can only go one way.”

Alex Shearer
THE STOLEN

Our lives begin with passed down lullabies with verses of old.   In the lap of an elder we hear ancient stories beginning with "Once Upon A Time...".   The years follow with "Time to get up sleepyhead," or "Come on now, time for bed!" The days of regulation stream far ahead.

We observe children playing alone outdoors with great animation caught in some magical illusion ignoring all time and space.  We hear others reporting, "Time just stood still."   In crisis we hear people say, "I just need a minute," knowing full well our  lives will never regain original cadence.

There are pockets in time waiting for us, if we would just be willing to duck out of our restraints.  These pockets are deep and comfortable and need to be visited often.  Children know of the magic held within the pockets of time.   They savor each and every moment, reluctantly returning to the regime of time upon hearing their mother's voice calling, "Come home!"

The expansion and contraction of time is amazing.  When we are engaged in a task we dislike, we seem to be trapped forever; whereas, when we are engaged in something pleasing, the time can pass far too quickly.  When we are mesmerized by the aspects of a new creative adventure, we can forget about time all together, exclaiming, "Where did the time go?"  Passing of Time, In Time, At the End of Time, Another Time, There is No Time, and Being Lost in Time, as you see the phrases are endless.

There are individuals who have a favorite time of day.  For some it is the first breath of the day communing with the Divine while others choose the sun setting, feeling the presence of Allah.  Still others find peace and calm watching the moon gently pass across the sky.  And then there are those who can relax only upon connecting with the mattress of their bed at day's end.   All of these passings can be magical pockets of time.

Although I can be an highly organized individual, I much prefer to be a procrastinator with time.  I enjoy the sense of being boundless by just experiencing the moment.  I resent others who try to dictate my time.  I do my best to carry all of the elements of time within my elaborate pocket.  I want to sprinkle my minutes as I see fit, and savor the ones still lingering in the creases of the fabric lining my pocket.  I will not squander even one wink of time unless I get caught in the twinkling of the Divine.

Unaccountable Time

"I think I can,
I think I can,
oh my yes,
I think I can."

    THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD

We seem to wander in a wilderness, wondering where we are to be led, and waiting for some sense of direction.  We eventually come upon a clearing with a sunburst of ideas.  We begin our quest, scaling the mountain of challenge before us.   At midpoint,  we find our selves wondering if we really are on the right path.  We try to overcome our doubts by healthy self-talk of "I think I can."  We miraculously reach the peak, but only briefly enjoy the thrill of accomplishment as we assess our ability to stay balanced on the top.

The options are numerous.  We can back slide, only to be required to repeat our journey.  We can attempt to stay on the peak, but find our selves pushing others away as there is only room for one.  We can carefully choose a path down the other side of the mountain which seems equally as tenuous and somewhat discouraging.  The best option would be to fly!

Divine Spirit tends to nudge us to the edge and then pushes us to take a trusting leap into the depth of our life.  Trust is increased as there is no safety net beneath us.  We allow the wind to blow away our fear so we can concentrate on the brilliant stars in the sky.  The moon tends to encourage us to pick a star, any star, where we can safely rest.  Settling on the star we like best, we are allowed to dream our dream or make our wish.  In this slice of unaccountable time, we can see how to change our experiences from ordinary to extraordinary.  We feel the support of the entire Universe.

The star free falls from the sky and we gently absorb the energy and light on our spiraling ride down.  Back on our own two feet, we feel like running with joy, filled with anticipation for what is yet to come.  We hear our selves chanting, "I think I can, I think I can, oh my yes, I think I can!"

Eternity

To clarify "eternal" just a smidge ...

Once the river of time has rounded her final bend,

and the last star in the sky has brightened its last night,

and every child who may ever be conceived

has been given ten thousand names ...

we will have just begun.

The Universe

For some reason, thoughts of eternity rattle around in my brain.  We hear politicians refer to a future global war having the potential to wipe everyone off the face of this earth which causes great anxiety.  Eckhart Tolle encourages us to stay in the present moment, not in the past and not in the future.  To "BE HERE NOW" (the title of one of his very interesting books).  Without delving into detail, I do believe if we practice being in the now, we will avoid future disaster.

Once the river of time has rounded her final bend ...

Time was created by man to bring order to life.  The sequences of nature, however, are not regulated with a giant clock in the sky.  Nature seems to have an intimate connection with Divine Spirit, trusting everything will fold in its proper way.

and the last star in the sky has brightened its last night ...

Stars have been known to man forever and I sense nature knew them long before man.  We become aware of stars as children and stars continue to cause us 'wonder' throughout our lives.

and every child who may ever be conceived has been given ten thousand names ...

There are many people who still believe that we are born, we live, and then we die. Nothing more. While others believe we are born, live, die, and then go to heaven.  There are others  who believe we live many lives and have an existence before our life and after our life.

we will have just begun ...

If we entertain these ideas, we can easily become overwhelmed or anxious, but these very ideas give me hope and a happy heart.
