Distraction

"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body."
Joseph Addison

When is the last time you read something on your favorite subject? Time passes and new information is added which may be quite stimulating. You may find yourself reinvested in topics that have become stagnant. We may also be surprised to discover that our opinions on the subject may have shifted.

We are living in a period of great change addled by heightened activities. The more we try to stop dwelling on things we cannot change, the more obsessive we can become. Getting lost in a book is a perfect way to distract yourself. It entertains the brain while allowing your nervous system a well-deserved rest.

During this frigid weather, we may have less exposure to others. We can begin to feel captive, shut off or isolated. Maybe it is time to explore plans for an imaginary vacation. Research scenarios where there is sunshine and entertainment. Rearrange a room, decluttering as you go. Then end the day with a very favorite book!

Muck and Mire

"Our real blessings often appear to us in shape of pains,
losses and disappointments; but let us have patience and
we soon shall see them in proper figures."
Joseph Addison

Cycles have been prevalent in my life whether seasonal, biological, or mental.  To be aware of a cycle, one is more apt to view the big picture rather than small snapshots of life unfolding.  To maintain the larger view, one must stand back and not be stuck in the middle of the muddle.

Even though I am aware of my cycles, I tend to be distracted by details and silent nuances before I become aware that I am trudging through knee deep muck and mire.   It is necessary for me to pull back on my lens immediately in order to focus on higher ground.

Being of private nature, I depend upon myself for redirection.  I tell myself, "I know I did not come back for this; persevere, something better must be waiting ahead."  With hindsight, the cycle is readily recognized.  Many of my lessons are simply blessings in disguise.

Tears, Laced with Hope

"Our real blessings often appear to us
in the shape of pains, losses, and disappointments;
but let us have patience and we soon shall see them in proper figures."

Joseph Addison

It is remarkable to witness the resilience of a person caught in the depths of an emotional storm.  There is little to do to protect them from unanticipated flying debris or the unearthed brokenness of despair.

As time stretches we observe the spirit expand to withstand the pressure of avoidance or denial; and then saddened with the contractions of reality and injury.  Helpless, we stand guard as a loyal guest on the disrupting path.

We quit holding our breath when we hear the first attempt of laughter coming through tears, laced with hope.  In time, the laughter is transitioned into positive action.  The residue of pain is expressed through unique creativity and at long last, the loyal guest not longer stands guard.
