"The first prerequisite to Spirituality is ability to be connected
to mysteries without having to explain them."
Thomas Moore
A Personal Spirituality: Finding Your Own Way to a Meaningful Life
Thomas Moore's new book, A PERSONAL SPIRITUALITY: FINDING YOUR OWN WAY TO A MEANINGFUL LIFE shares thoughts about the mysteries of spirituality. He refers to our culture as having a neurosis to explaining everything with fact finding research. Also explored is our culture embracing mindfulness or meditation, but wanting to downplay the spirituality that accompanies it.
Our personal spirituality, borrows from other practises and traditions while remaining faithful to one's core beliefs. The beauty of spirituality is the connection we feel to the mysterious realms without having to explain them. The secular wants documentation, while spirituality focuses on connection.
Thomas Moore discusses how our world would be if would weave spirituality into the secular. Not through force or specific religion, but by blending the spiritual with the secular: business, money, medicine, sex and education. As the physical body evolves, so does the spiritual. Along with learning human development, aspects of the soul and spirit could also be shared. Perhaps this joined effort would establish deeper meaning in our lives from early on.
I strongly agree Virginia. I have encountered too many people who seem to use their "spirituality" as a direct excuse to ignore injustices that are happening to others they know. It seems counterproductive to the expansion of compassion on the planet when individuals attempt to use a "spiritual bypass" to ignore the very real ugliness that targets other individuals in our community. When there is no support (compassion) for the direct harshness of social injustice that some in our community experience daily in our 3D reality, then it isn't "spirituality" that is involved.
ReplyDeleteIt is a lack of compassion.
"Spiritual bypass" is when someone uses their "spirituality" as an excuse to not get involved in situations where others are being harmed around them by social injustice, etc.
They seem to believe their involvement to support others might hurt their spiritual life in someway. When individuals do this, then are their "spiritual" activities just ego driven, self-centered, "relaxation techniques"? Is our "spirituality" only meant to benefit ourselves ?
LOVE is an ACTION word. Martin Luther King and many other social justice pioneers always stated that. If we are not actively concerned about what other people around us are forced to experience in their lives, and supporting them when they are being harmed, then what are we using our "spirituality" for?
What is our "spirituality" informing us to do?
I guess the question seems to be if people think they are here in this life just for themselves?Any "spirituality" that can be used to promote that type of thinking seems very selfish and ego driven to me.
I find it curious that individuals who think if they give "their energy" to someone who needs crucial support from them, then it will divert their attention from their own "ascension". They want to ignore information about what is happening in the community, because it makes them uncomfortable, because they might feel guilty for not helping. I have met way too many "spiritual" people who seem to have the mindset that if they don't know what is actually happening to other people out in the world beyond themselves, then they are more comfortable. If it's not happening to them… then they don't want to know about it, because THEN it might bother them and they might have to take a stand using their "energy".
That is the definition of wanting to remain "unconscious".
I find that to be a very interesting "spiritual" position of too many people I have met. We will only advance as a community, and as a planet, when "Spiritual bypass" is not used to add to the evil of social injustice in our community.
