Remembering ...

"The effects of loss are acute, and unique to each individual.
Not everyone mourns in the same way."
Richelle E. Goodrich

There are numerous ways to mourn and some prefer to avoid all aspects of death and dying.  Obviously, we can choose the way we want to react; however, some effort of respect and gratitude aught to be offered whether great or small.

For all of the young who gave up life in war, and for all of the life time soldiers who were killed, in my heart I feel respect and gratitude.  As of yet, however, I do not understand the overall benefits of war.  The wars in our own country need to be addressed:  racism; poverty; disease; mental illness; drugs to mention just a few.

Each one of us has a particular reason for living and a gift to be shared.  So I honor all who die no matter the cause.  To give respect as respect is due, we can save our countries money, recognize all as brothers and sisters, and share our gifts.  Today, I remember those who have passed and I have hope for those who still live.

Human Suit, Shed

"Remembering is easy.
It's forgetting that's hard."
Brodi Ashton

Seldom do I read war stories, but those who have perished remain carved in my heart. I reflect upon the masses with gratitude and celebrate the individual warriors I knew.  I do not remember friends killed or disabled during war in a maudlin way, but I will sit with how I remember their unique personalities ... how they made me laugh or cry.  I try to remember the essence of his or her being.

The normal process of life includes death and those who have touched me personally, are carved into the landscape of my mind.  I have no intention of dismissing them, but choose to see them in my mind as they were and how they displayed his or her purpose.

Perhaps it is my spiritual belief about death ... it is one door closing or one door opening.  Either way, I believe our human suit is shed and our soul continues on to be greeted by other loving beings.  The ones whom suffer are the ones being left behind, unless they regulate compassion.

Subjective

"Rise and enter this day
as if it is your first and your last."
Mark Nepo

It was noticed, time and time again, that a friend was depressed.  Plans were made to meet for lunch and offer an arena for the one women to explore what was missing in her life.  The friend asked, "What did you used to do with your time?"  A broad smile swiftly swept across the sad woman's face and words of delight followed.

A very long list of activities was given:  ceramics, yoga, bird watching, and dance.  As a loyal wife, she explained, since her husband retired, she one by one gave up her favorite things, as he was not interested.  He liked to watch television, especially sports.

Where is our backbone?  What happens to our voice?  How have we reduced our power?   Why do we become subjective?  Women have the tendency to give up their power. If we push every person back and create a list of things we have relinquished or things we have yet to try, we can begin to breathe life back into our existence.  Life is not over, begin once again.

The Power of Voice

"As we practice stating our feelings and needs directly,
the need to manipulate falls away and we begin to feel our inherent power."
Shakti Gawain

When we do not value our lovely selves, we have a difficult time asking for things or expressing our feelings.  If we do not feel worthy, we hide what we want behind cloaked statements.  We try to manipulate a person or situation into making us happy when we have not made our intentions clear.

In time, we begin to hear our own voice and eventually we begin to project it.  We are often met with rejection, but the power in using our words makes us stronger.  Uttering our true thoughts can make us understand our personal value whether or not others respond.

As all things, using our voice is a process.  First we must determine what is truly in our heart.  Then we choose the words to frame the projection out into the world.  We continue to move forward, revealing more of our inner strength until finally we are heard!

LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

"Today, you  are just going to look at the
positive, beautiful, miraculous things ..."
Rosie Molinary

When asked what I liked about myself, several things came to mind; but, I slowly realized that many of those things were not as prevalent as they once were.  I am no longer a shoeless and long haired hippie, I am more similar to an eccentric spirit.  I am not a protester, but an observer.  My gypsy blood still runs rampant, but social isolation currently curbs my wandering.

Popcorn and ice cream are still my deepest cravings, and books or writing continues to be in my veins.  I am no longer gregarious and perfectly content to remain in a candle lit domain.  I continue to have a passion for understanding people and untangling their dreams.  Wisdom comes from whispers and images from clouds while insights mysteriously unveil within.

I do not wish to begin to live my life over nor do I want to be a child in our society today.  I am gravely disappointed that our collective consciousness is not higher than I envisioned for my lasting days. My greatest hurdle has been patriarchal theory, previously giving all of my power away.  I have been gifted with children, blessed by kindred spirits, and grateful for the healing of scars once cast upon my bleeding heart. I have unpacked my dark side, and watch for the light at the end of the tunnel.

STILL BREATHING ...

"One of the secrets of a happy life is continuous small treats."
Iris Murdoch

When we accept that we do not have control over our lives and no matter how carefully we plan or act, things will go awry.  By giving value to each day without anticipating the weekend and staying in the present moment, we can experience numerous small amusements.

My four year old grandson and I stopped by a neighborhood park.  He badgered me into going down the slide.  Now, I wasn't afraid of hitting the bottom, but I was very concerned about getting stuck half way down due to my width.  Surviving the slide, we went to the swings and I felt as though I were ten years old.

When we make the choice to step out of our defined roles, and enhance a sliver of time, our lives can begin to sparkle.  We can impulsively splurge on buying ourselves flowers or chocolates or ice cream.  We can avoid responsibilities by sitting on the porch and watching the neighbor dig in his or her garden.  Begin to spend small portions of the day by grasping a small filament of joy. You are a living human being so have a glass of wine, take a bubble bath, or light some candles as a way to celebrate we are still breathing!

What To Do With Loneliness

"Life may be brimming over with experience, but somewhere,
deep inside, all of us carry a vast and fruitful loneliness
wherever we go."
Etty Hillesum

It is not unusual to feel a loneliness inside, and it doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong.  During this period of virus isolation, we have seen far fewer people whether traveling to and from work or simply running errands.  It is also a fact that as we age, we spend less time with others, friends pass or relocate.

Loneliness can have numerous origins.  Some experience loneliness from being cooped up with children and not enough adult conversation or just the opposite, children are gone and no conversation.  Husbands may be introverted and we may have politely bowed out of long standing positions with clubs or groups.   We make choices as to how we want to spend our time.  If we are saturated with reading material and writing projects, loneliness at some point catches up with us.

We have the option to use this space in time for simply pondering or engaging in an outdoor project or a new walking regime.  Loneliness simply presents itself, but we can easily adjust if we alter our routines.  Loneliness can be a concern if it is allowed to spiral out of control, filled with worries and fear; so  prepare ideas for when a pause enters life, as it is part of our process.

Permission Slip

"You are the sky.  Everything else ...
it's just the weather."
Pema Chodron

This post hereby gives you permission to seek and determine what is missing from your daily life.  Begin a search for anything from ice cream to a second career.  We are all individuals, so peek inside and listen for any suggestions to guide you.

We are a 'present' into this world, bringing unique qualities that can be gifted to others.  We are meant to shine and reflect.  Too often we down play our strengths as we find them easy, forgetting they can be a challenge to someone else. It is odd that we tend to hide our own uniqueness.

Each one of us has a special space needing to be dusted off and nurtured.  As we tend to what has been neglected, we will experience the kindling in our spirit.  Our fire will once again be lit, attracting kindred spirits, creativity, and fullness of the soul.

Choice and Intention

"... we are always free to go back and right old wrongs,
correct mistaken perceptions, heal wounds, forgive and begin anew."
DAILY OM

As we gaze back over childhood trauma, we have the opportunity to lessen the pain, by focusing on personal strengths that carried us through.  Instead of looking at what happened to us, we can look at our lovely selves and be amazed at how we carried through.

We notice negative behaviors that were once required, but now understand they are no longer needed. No longer are we a defenseless child, but a perfectly capable adult who makes healthy choices for our healing and growth.

Like a child in a sandbox, we can sift through grains of time, picking out the good that is supportive and reflective of our true nature.   To hang on to what is no more, prevents us from propelling into the richness and beauty of life God intended.

Inside Support

"I accept both the masculine and
feminine energies within me; I feel whole."
Shakti Gawain

Shirley MacLaine somehow swooped into my life with her outspoken views and authentic non-fiction books.  I remember in my ignorance thinking I could only have such freedom of speech if I lived in California!  I've come a long way baby!

The concept of having both male and female qualities were very significant in broadening aspects of myself.  I had always felt the need to be strong (masculine) hiding emotional sensations (feminine).  With new information, I was able to let my boundaries alternate between the two powers.  The revelation increased my identity with self.

Today I was reading how our masculine should "support" our feminine side.  From early on, I  had thought, literally, men would support women. Now, I understand that all the support I need comes from inside, from my masculine side, not from a man. This creates the wholeness with both masculine and feminine stepping up when support is needed.

What You Have Not

"Do not spoil what you have
by desiring what you have not."
Ann Brashares

We make a list of 'toys' we so desperately want. When we graciously receive one, we simply cross it off the list, and begin pining for the next.  There is nothing wrong with anticipating the future, but we are not appreciating the present when we are constantly thinking: "the next bathing suit I have; the next apartment I live in; the next car I buy; or the next man I meet ..."

There is importance in maintaining an awareness of the what is before us.  There is much to be said about living in the moment, as they are not forever either. "I wish I had told her; I wish I had used it more; I wish I had seen that first ..."

While attending a private college prep academy, I became very aware of a similarity between the wealthy style of life and mine.  The wealthy had cars, clothes, and huge homes, but they experienced the same loneliness within them that I also had. It was at this young age that I learned never to wish for someone else's life and to focus upon what was before me.

Waiting Room

"When something upsetting happens, do I stay present and aware or
do I retreat into a mental waiting room until things calm down?
Janet Conner, WRITING DOWN YOUR SOUL

Waiting might be for the other shoe to drop or for the baby to be born or a decision to be made.  It seems to mean sitting still and feels somewhat powerless. Retreating tends to imply pulling back, relocating, or removing oneself.  It is the act of movement, not waiting.

As in many words, the action can be negative or positive.  Waiting for a severe pain to go away, might not be as positive as waiting for the cars to pass.  Retreating to a rejuvenating setting is far better than escaping from a situation.

The idea of a waiting room offers compromise.  To simply sit with a situation, pondering the pros and cons, may be the wisest choice we make.  Rather than avoidance or hiding, we can take pause to evaluate before reentering the questionable situation.  It is a chance to direct our energy towards a positive solution.

See What's There!

"If you can't see what you are looking for
see what's there."
Mark Nepo

There is a picture attached to this blog post.  Take a moment and glance at it.  Now look back at it, staring a might harder.  Do you see the stick figure on the tree?  Often, we see what we expect to see ... trees, flowers, and sky in the background.  If we would slow down and embrace what is in front of us, we would receive so much more than we bargained for.

As every morning, I sat by the window writing and reading.  Continuously, I would glance outside through the bottom pane of the window.  Once in a while there might be a person walking the circular path way and I would extend my hand sending Reiki energy.

Bored with my morning routine, I stretched back into my chair which allowed me to look out of the top pane of the window.  Behold, there was a hawk circling before my amazed eyes!  He was low, not high ,  and I could view him perfectly.  Cream, golden brown, and a touch of red gently floating, perhaps waiting for me to gain a full view.  I sent him gratitude, wishing him safe journeys as he turned and flew high up into the sky.

Connection

"People are impacted and affected
through a moment of shared witnessing."
Krista Tipplett

There are times we feel unseen walking upon this earth.  Numerous times, however, this is not completely true.  A woman up in her apartment may be watching you push to complete a run or the man watering his lawn might be aware of the struggling child learning how to ride the bike.  There could be a senior staff member who especially likes your style and unbeknownst to you, he is tracking your career.

The same is true for our words, especially with cell phones.  In a store, our words carry.  An unknowing woman spoke into her cell, "Well actually I am in the middle of a meeting right now."  Then she looked up, saw me standing next to her viewing items on the shelf and overhearing her lie.

A bird may never know we hear the morning song being sung.  The crying infant may never know how it deeply moved us into memory.  The chalk drawing on the sidewalk may have given a child enormous pleasure, but never be aware of how delighted adults were to see the work.  Everything that happens, whether seen or heard, connects to other people, places, and things.

Mood Music

"Music allows us both to be alone
as well as to be in company."
Padraig O Tuama

Straight out of college, I worked in a Head Start Program where the morning routine called for us to feed the children, oversee the brushing of teeth, and then gather into a circle.  We would watch the behavior each child to determine the type of music to start our day.

If the children were hyper, we would play calming music to slow them down for open learning.  When they were lethargic, we would play dance music to shake them up.  In between these two levels, we would play music in the telling of a story or inspiring a creative idea.  Music was a wonderful tool.

I found the same scenarios while I raised my own children who were deeply rooted in music (not my genes).  Well into the empty nest syndrome, I began to realize that in spite of thriving on quietude, there were days music was a welcomed friend. And what fun it is to sing when no one is listening!

Remove Restrictions

"By removing restrictions, even for a day,  we allow
ourselves to make new choices about what we want
to include into our life experiences."
Daily Om

Repeated behavior leads us to be contained in our thoughts and deeds.  We react on automatic pilot, rather than viewing a crisp action, feeling a new sensation, or expanding a belief system.  If life seems dull or boring, it is time to adjust our lenses and shift our focus.

It may be time to replace old activities with attention to brightening our home, lifting our thoughts, or seeing new aspects of friendship.  When we take people, places. and things for granted, we are in a sheltered position, missing the new life in others.

As we expand our awareness, we may discover a class at the community college on photography or music that awakens a desire within us.  At a gathering, there may be an individual that has continuously peaked our curiosity, but we have never met, until now.  Recall a trail or greenway that looks so inviting, but we limit our selves to circling our neighborhood.  Start something new and follow through!

Be What You Seek

"Peace is already here, regardless of any
internal or external circumstances."
Gangaji

We will be at peace when we ... find the right job; love the right mate; build the best house; bring a baby into the world; and have enough money.  Statistics reflect that none of these accomplishments bring eternal peace. The ironic part is that peace is not outside of ourselves, but within. We are looking in the wrong places!

Peace is a constant within us if we choose to cultivate it.  Our body, mind, and spirit can learn to first turn inward towards a sense of calm.  To withdraw, even with just a breath, can touch the sweet spot of comfort.  There is the need to build and project, but our return is peaceful when we are based in this tranquillity.

Our physical form on earth has intentions that will be challenged in numerous ways.  The wind blows, we wander off the path; storms pound, we seek shelter; lack of manifestation, we give up.  It is all a part of the human experience.  If we but navigate from our core where peace resides, we will continue to be challenged, but our responses will be lined with peaceful intentions. Be what you seek.

The Power of Positive Perspectives

"When you put action into your words and thoughts,
watch what happens."
Gloria Chadwich

When we label a situation as a problem, it takes on a sense of negativity.  We can feel a weight upon us as all of our past negative situations have doomed us.  Instead of resolve, we may begin to think of what this situation is going to cost us and how we will survive.

If we can shift our terminology from negative to positive, we will embrace a totally different experience.  "I love the word challenge because it fills me with energy and inspires me into positive action;" states Gloria Chadwich, "But others may prefer the word opportunity as this brings to mind gentle and quiet changes."

The wording of our situations can stimulate us, allow us to feel powerful, and assist in creating new aspects of our lives.  When we think in positive terms our mind broadens and becomes  receptive to new patterns or cycles of living.  Our confidence grows as we build strength, and we begin to feel the presence of  the  light shining within us.

When the Light Bulb Goes Off

"I have not failed. I have just found 10,000
 ways that won't work."
Thomas Edison

While browsing through various writings, I came across some information regarding Thomas Edison.  It reflected that he would have a vision of an idea, and then set out a way to create it.  As very few seldom succeed on first attempt, Edison diligently moved forward applying one formation after another, with out succeeding for quite a while.

It was interesting to me that Thomas Edison never became negative when he fell short of his mark.  He did not delve into past errors nor did he suffer from the comments other inventors were stating.  He stayed with his vision, patiently advancing forward until it all came together.

Edison's approach was so fundamental and yet very few of us honor and respect our challenging endeavors.  We prematurely give up, and use our energy to listen to the criticism of self or others, depleting our progression.  Let's be patient, and keep trying until the light bulb goes off!

Treasure Map

"A sister is a gift of the heart, a friend to the spirit,
a golden thread to the meaning of life."
Isadora James

Today, our society is extremely mobile with families strung out across the many states.  Family reunions and sibling relations have stretched to the limit by the changes in family structure.  As we see our relations less, we may find neighbors or new friends who shape into what we experience as family.

Today is my sister's birthday and I will always wish both her and her family well.  Most generally, we have lived our lives in differing states, but still experience a bond that stretches over time and place.  I regret that our families have not physically seen each other in years, but our hearts are still in place.

My gypsy blood has left its trace across a map that not one person would follow.  It stretches at times to great heights and unfortunately falls face first into unwelcoming depths.  In stead of cities highlighting my map, there are marks from where I encountered 'sisters' who loved me unconditionally, saved me from my lovely self, and assisted my forward movement through song, dance, and vision.  We are all related, and for that I am deeply grateful.

Not Your Children

HAPPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY MY SON
May 10, 1971

"Your children are not your children.
They are sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you.
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
Which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams."

Khalil Gibran

Deeply Touched My Soul

"A little known fact is that the most insidious forms of
patriarchy are unconsciously passed down from mother to daughter."
Bethany Webster

Let us celebrate everyone who impacts a woman in spite of genes, cultures, or oppositions.  Whether we were adopted, befriended  or secretly repressed, hats off to all who truly tried, succeeded or failed. Honor in the midst of all women benefits us all.

A remarkable woman may never be 'seen' by her child, but this may be the gift passed down to the following generation.  It is vital to know both blessings and secrets to be able to fully comprehend both the parent and the child.  It is senseless to keep repeating without appreciation and improvement.

Mother Earth is a wonderful example.  She tries her best to support and flourish, but not all born to her respect, nurture and replenish. Not all tread lightly with honor and respect.  The word mother is a wonderful Hallmark profit, but it is not enough to thank all of the women in my life who have deeply touched my soul as a mother could.

Two Places, Not One

"I am grounded and centered."
Shakti Gawain
REFLECTIONS IN THE LIGHT

To be completely still in mind, body and spirit can be a blissful experience.  It is having the ability to be aware of the self and yet not feel the confines of the body.  One can imagine color and energy both pushing upwards and downwards, intermingling.  Earth energy spiraling upwards connects us with our physical and the Sacred energy pouring into the top of our heads is a swishing golden light.  Our spine is our core enlightened, healed, and strengthened.

With both feet upon the ground, we are held steady as our minds expand beyond the human experience.  We can visit other realms while standing still.  If and when we are able to sustain the sensation of being a conduit between above and below, we will understand the words grounded and centered.

Shed any self-conscious thoughts and allow the physical body to be attached to earth whether sitting, standing or lying down.  There is no need to be upon a mountain top or whisked away to a spiritual retreat, to experience the fullness of life.  Drop all expectations and any sense of right or wrong. Be comfortable and close both eyes.  Through prayer or visualization beckon to be one with all.

Exposing the Self

"Every person we meet can effect us profoundly, just as
every situation we find ourselves in can teach us something new."
Daily Om

It is not an uncommon story for an average person to accidentally form a relationship with someone for a length of time prior to realizing his or her impact upon our society or world.  Artists, scientists, and musicians frequently go unrecognized, as they too want to be accepted just as a human being.

There is great joy for a musician to sit anonymously in a train station or a busy street corner to publicly share his or her passion.  There is joy in releasing specific love out into unknown.  An author, unrecognized, finds great freedom in sharing thoughts without worry of quotations or sentence alignment.

Inspiration comes from the heart and we share our authentic self with others, a gift is exchanged.  Without 'sir' names or identification, one can truly be honest and impact the life of one other, never knowing the gift until moments, minutes or years later.

Travel Alone, No More

"As you exhale, try to relax your resistance to the unexpected.
As you inhale, try to make a passageway for everything larger than you."
Mark Nepo

Throughout life, we may have been fear based which has done nothing but prevent the full spectrum of living.  Fear keeps us small, and we do our best to minimize being discovered.  The last thing on the agenda is exposure.

Fear is a darkness curtailing growth as well as human touch.  Instead of being drawn creatively to the light, we cower in cloak of distrust.  Like attracts like, so life experience is stunted reenforcing false theories of being unworthy.

Trust when a small beacon of light shows itself.  Muster strength to reach through this undocumented fear and feel a spark of a different way of living.  Gather curiosity as a crutch to move forward into the arena of possibilities.  Angels mingle with opportunities, spiritual guides hold a master plan, and God becomes a veil of shelter.  It will still storm and thunder, but no one will be traveling alone ... not any more.

Steps in Safest Possible Way

"She rebelled against her own fear and self-loathing,
her own powerlessness and the gross misuses of
power that had maimed her."
Dominique Christina

There are endless female warriors in our world, who hide battle scars, and have successfully pushed forward to make the spiritual path broader for all wounded souls.  This sounds dark, but as we deepen female friendships, we are taken on journeys far beyond our imaginings.  Our eyes sink from their eyes into their hearts and become amazed of what they have processed.

The term warrior is a determined emotional strength, not a physical power over others.  The Spiritual Warrior does not use swords no guns, but persistence, calm, and measures of peace.  This female soldier does not wear shields and helmets.  She bares an open heart and soul with open  arms for refuge.

Strength comes from processing our pain, memories, and hate.  We shed the negative as we know first hand that the need for love resides beneath violence.  Self-realization brings understanding that excuses from sustaining status of victim.  As we catch a glimpse of our true nature, we are empowered to move towards freedom in small steps processed in the safest possible way.

Audience Be Gone!

"We no longer need an audience to fly"
Mark Nepo

It is human nature to desire attention, but if the attention is gained through misrepresentation, there will be no fulfillment. Falsifying the self and receiving false recognition, makes us feel even more unworthy and adds pressure to continue to disingenuous.

To project our true nature, we must first recognize who we are at the core.  We dig within to discover what makes us unfold and blossom.  Attention is focused on heightening our strengths, not in discrediting who God made us to be.  The longer we put off self-involvement, the more difficult the unearthing will be.

If we can embrace who we are inside, we can love our selves enough that others will be attracted by our light.  Those who turn against us for being who we are, will not advance our growth and development.  To experience genuine attraction, fuels us to continue to find our gifts and soar! No longer is there a need for an audience.

Cultivation of the Heart

"We must have patience and love for the
unfolding creative process."
Shakti Gawain

In a quiet time, a small kernel of inspiration takes root.  We keep it hidden as we puzzle with our ability to follow through and while the idea begins to sprout, we need to be aware to water, cover, and protect this innocent bud.

It is in our best interest to keep our idea sheltered, not exposed to other's perceptions.  Let our vision   take root, sprout, and gently open to the outside world.  We must have patience as we hone our skill, and practice to do justice to our intended purpose.

If Spirit, indeed, leads us to our creative nature, who are we to judge it?   Who are we to ignore or kill what springs forth into our being? There is no such thing as perfection, and we must refrain from cluttering our minds with criticism, preventing any cultivation of the heart.

Genius Behind the Wound

"We may be closest to hearing the call
when we feel most alone or in trouble,
for no genius hides behind the wound.
Jung Platform

It would seem that misery and pain squelch our radiant thoughts, and in this place of hovering in fear, brilliant ideas or beneficial projections come through loud and clear.  We forget while we build boundaries to protect us, the stone walls will also keep out the crisp and new.

When we are down, all of the glory and chatter are swooped away, enabling us to finally listen to the call of spirit.  It is in this space of suspension, out of desperation, we may begin to understand who we truly are.  As we dismantle our boundaries, we are equally exposed to blessings and light.

Unhealed wounds fester until we bring them light, allowing them to heal.  It is in this process we come to understand a lesson early misunderstood.  The release lifts our heaviness and as the light flows in, we are inspired to utilize our creativity ... whatever that means as it is unique to each individual.  The key, of course is action.  Follow through, allowing spirit to flow through our veins.

Follow Through

"Sometimes, you will never know the value of a moment,
until it becomes a memory."
Dr. Seuss

Finally, we can claim May, a time for color, growth, and strength.  The hues of nature inspire us and encourage us to face rain, strong winds, and too much sun.  Nature sets the example and our mind creates a vision.  Often, we are not aware that we have been altered making a memory for all times.

Whether in appreciation of picking Dandelions, awed by the purple Iris or humbled by Lily of the Valley, little seeds of creation take root in the depths of our mind.  The seeds as they grow, niggle at us, prompting us to process whatever newness we may feel.

The fragrances of May flowers gently beckon to our growing roots, to push up into the sun. There is no competition or necessarily a prize.  It is simply an unfolding of another part of our creativity meant to sprout into the world.  The process of releasing what streams through us becomes a memory, if we but follow through.
