Virginia Carlson created Deciphering Dreams to assist others in aligning the dream world with every day experiences. Dreams are a form of language that is not only unique to each of us, but also intimate. We all have choice in declining or accepting information in our dreams and determining how to utilize this information.
The pathways into a deeper understanding of the self opens when the dreamer brings awareness to the dream scape where hidden desires unfold. Dream interpretation helps all of us to comprehend the message waiting to be revealed in vivid dreams from childhood, recurring dreams, and nightmares. By exploring dream time symbols, we not only discover our personal issues, but thoughts from the Universal Collective as well.
Virginia Carlson has been aware of the messages in dreams since childhood. As a mother of four, combined with her education in Psychology and Sociology she has a solid foundation for understanding creativity of the mind. As a professional in-home counselor for individuals, families, and young children, she has been provided with a broad spectrum of hands on experience. Her passion for helping others coupled with her unique approach, have attracted the enthusiasm and support of local and distant communities. She is a Master level energy worker, prolific writer, and seasoned presenter.
Deciphering Dreams with Virginia Carlson explores day dreams; waking dreams; recurring dreams; prophetic dreams; past life recollections; universal symbols; and dreams appearing to be positively silly and preposterous. She uses her intuition as well as established public research to assist in understanding the entire spectrum of dreams. By using dream time language, desires or repressions come to the surface. Dream interpretation is about the dreamer, based on the dreamer's own experiences, and uniquely linking the dreamer's body, mind and spirit.
Unraveling a dream with Virginia Carlson is a fun and exciting experience. A simple technique to unlock the dreams of the dreamer is shared with each participant through the interpretation process.

Day Dream with a Squirrel

"In sleep, fantasy takes the form of dreams.  But in waking life, too,
we continue to dream beneath the threshold of consciousness,
especially when under the influence of repressed or
other unconscious complexes."

C.G. Jung
Problems of Modern Psychotherapy
(1929)

In the early morning, coffee cup in hand, I wandered out onto the back deck.  As I was sitting down appreciating the beautiful day presented before me, I noticed a squirrel hanging over our gutter looking down at me.  I am not a huge fan of squirrels.  I have nothing against them, but they are not my favorite as I find them to be annoying.  This may be based on an earlier experience:

I came home from work to go to bed with an out of control migraine.  I no sooner crawled into bed, when I heard a squirrel prancing around on our roof.  The noise that followed cannot be put into words, but the squirrel's actions can.  The squirrel fell down our capped fireplace chimney which happened to be metal lined.  So his claws screeched on the metal all of the way down as he made a god awful noise not endearing to my migraine.  Luckily, the glass doors were closed so when I pulled my body out of bed, my head throbbing, I could watch this small animal run around in circles safely behind glass doors.

I could tell you that the story ends here, but it doesn't.  I wanted this squirrel out of my house and out of my house now.  I called the Humane Society and 'instructed' them to come immediately.  They told me kindly that they only rescued dogs or cats.  Oh!  Did I say squirrel?  Perhaps it was a cat.  They arrived within 15 minutes.

In the meantime, I placed an ironing board, a foot rest, and a collapsible clothes rack to form a path for the squirrel to depart with grace.  I talked to the squirrel, yes, I did.  I told the frightened animal that he would be out momentarily if he would just calm down and cooperate.  I extended light to him to help him relax and not feel as though he was in harms way.  I sensed, however, he knew I was ready to do him harm.

The Humane Society gentleman arrived in his truck bearing nets and all kinds of rescue things.  He came into the house saying, "Now when I open these glass doors, I want you to be standing right here."  Oh no, all I could think of was that Chevy Chase movie with some animal hanging down his face.  I politely, okay maybe not so politely,  explained to him that he was the trained professional and I was a by stander.    Remarkably, things went well.  He opened the glass doors and pulled the screen carefully back.  The squirrel hopped out, followed my make shift path and ran out the door.  The kind animal rescuer  looked at me and said, "Boy that cat sure looked like a squirrel!"  Funny man.  I promptly returned to bed with an extra dose of medication.

But I digress.  Today's morning squirrel was simply hanging off the gutter wondering what I was doing interrupting his play.  After trying to stare each other down, he scampered down the width of the house and jumped onto our privacy fence.  I watched as he ran around the entire fenced yard, and gracefully jumped back on the roof and once again began hanging from the gutter.  We again stared at each other.  So was I supposed to applaud or was he showing me something?

I began as usual ... if this were a waking dream, what would it be telling me?  Given my recent focus on repeated behavioral patterns, it was easy to figure out.  When we are hanging by our last thread we are faced with options.  Do we want to take the short lesson running the width of the house or do we want to take the long version which often times returns us right back where we started ... this being the lesson in itself.

This comes easily for me as I am a person who usually takes the longer route.  As I travel along, I get distracted, meet kindred spirits, and my fears subside.  Unfortunately, at some point I realize I am right back where I started and I am still face to face with the problem.  Nothing has been resolved.  If I had taken the shorter route, I would not have been distracted and hopefully I would have discovered resolve, ending up in a very different place.

There is much to be learned from our day dreams if we take the time to truly see what is being shown to us.  The actions of all things tell us a story about our personal life and behaviors.

Deciphering Dreams at the Imagine Foundation Gallery Hop

Deciphering Dreams
Imagine Foundation
Gallery Hop
 Jacksonville, Illinois

ARTICULATING SILENCE, DECIPHERING DREAMS, and  EXPLORING INNER LANDSCAPES, have been three areas of my expertise for quite some time.   On the evening of June 7, 2013, I participated in the Imagine Foundation's Gallery Hop in Jacksonville, Illinois offering opportunities for people to decipher their dreams.  I attended the event with Teri Freesmeyer (Intuitive, Medium and Healer extraordinaire) and a new friend Ellen (Tarot Card Intuitive).  Other vendors were artists, jewelers, and other small cottage industries like bath salts, natural soaps, and oils.  It was well attended and extremely beneficial for me to attend.

As a small child, I experienced very vivid and intense dreams.  I had a recurring dream for many years until the meaning was finally untangled much later in life.  In college, I explored dream work through psychology.  My passion for understanding dreams laced throughout my life.  I was always working with dreams of friends, neighbors, and then friends of my children.  I have studied
dreams for many years, making my first debut presentation at Open Doors for an all day workshop.  Since then I have made additional informative talks and presentations on this subject.  I find dream content to be extremely intriguing and reflective.

While attending this event for the Imagine Foundation, my desire to work with dreams grew more intensely.  It is an amazing experience to listen to a person tell their dream with anxiety or perplexity, and then through discussion watch their face become filled with peace and wonderment.  There is much to be learned by deciphering dreams, as they reflect what we repress, fear or desire.

Dreams are a visual language and we all dream every night.  Most of us just don't remember, but we do all dream.  In addition, we frequently day dream which can be vitally important as well.  By understanding these sequences, we can gain better insight into our subconscious minds.

At this time, therefore, I am offering a new addition to my services:  Deciphering Dreams.  I have created a new e-mail address (  decipheringdreams@yahoo.com  ) so people can send me their dreams for interpretation.  There is a charge for each dream, so a phone number must be included to secure payment.  Dreams remain confidential and further consultations can also be arranged.
I welcome the opportunity to be a guest speaker for small or large gatherings.  (Fees will be determined)

I believe it was Edgar Allan Poe who said,  “All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.”  Curious?   Send me a dream e-mail:  decipheringdreams@yahoo.com .

Dreams Illustrate

Dreams and Dreaming

Dreams are illustrations...
from the book your soul is writing about you.

~ Marsha Norman

As a child, I had very vivid dreams, I would dream walk and  I had recurring dreams.  I had always been interested in the night time realm, and  I would frequently encourage others to talk about their own dreams, hoping to learn from their experiences as well.     Pajama parties or sleep overs were the perfect setting to obtain such information.

As I grew older, I read books about dreams and dream symbols.  My interest in dreams was never front and center so to speak, but it was always simmering on the back burner.  In college I achieved a double major in psychology and sociology.  While studying different aspects about psychology, more documentation regarding dreams came forward.  I deliberately set out to remember my dreams more accurately.

While raising four children, there was very little time to explore inner landscapes, but numerous times when my own children and their friends would share their dreams.  I started helping them to understand what they could remember rather than be confused.  When I returned to my career, dreams became a back drop once again, but I did start recording my dreams.  For years, I created my personal dream journals.

As life unfolded, opportunities to speak about deciphering dreams became plentiful.  Joyful experiences of speaking in private homes or social clubs were readily available.  A friend of mine who was a therapist joined me in an endeavor to host a dream workshop.  The all day workshop was well attended and it was a very rewarding experience.  So rewarding, I have repeated this experience offering information, sharing many stories and giving examples for others to better understand dreams as well.

So in search of creating more opportunities to understand dreams, I have decided to offer my knowledge to others.  If you have a vivid childhood dream, recurring dream, or nightmare, please allow me to help you decipher your dream.

Holding Stars

sacred vessels

it was when she dipped deep inside, and scooped out her very essence - and then stretched her arms outwards with her hands full of stars - it was when those stars passed thru her fingers and out to the world - it was then she understood she was a sacred vessel. that we are all sacred vessels - with the entire universe flowing thru us - and all we need to do is open and be.

Bone Sigh Arts

Wouldn't it be wonderful to truly experience our  essence?  Can we possibly imagine holding stars in our hands  as they drip through our fingers out into the world?   Could we really rid our sacred selves of body shame and illusion of worthlessness?  How do we authentically open our selves enough to feel the universe surging through us?

If we are diligent in our personal growth, one day we will experience a full sense of who we are at the core.  We will feel a sense being whole even if we are imperfect and still missing pieces.  Recall what it was like to hold a lightening bug in our child like hands, and then feel how magical it would be to hold a star in our hands.  Although difficult to imagine, think of our selves as being so significant that we can drip importance into the world.

We are all sacred vessels holding Divine Spirit within us.  Once we tap into this Divine Sacredness, we ignite our hidden light and shine it brightly for others to see.  As a sacred vessel, our dreams, intentions, and life purpose flow through us as opportunities to extend loving kindness into a peaceful world.

I  am still  entranced by the imagery of holding stars in my hand.

Less is More

Come, come , Whoever you are
Wanderer, Worshipper, lover of leaving
it doesn't matter,
ours is not a caravan of despair.
Come, even if you have broken your vow
a hundred times
Come, Come again, Come.

~rumi

Walking by the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, the chilly waves cleanse my feet, and all negative thoughts.  I am lulled by the sound of the ocean and comforted by the warm sun upon my back. The gentle breeze encourages me to walk just a little further, and then a little bit more.

I came across this Rumi quote written on a post card in a great unique shop named THE GREEN PINEAPPLE.  I have been a wanderer all of my life whether it be of body, mind, or soul.  Life has guided me in so many directions, I have often wondered if I don't have 'gypsy' blood.  My travels have been many, but only to places provoking deeper parts of my self to surface.   The more I get to know my inner self, the more I realize I am no longer the person I have been.  Layer upon layer sheds, and the lighter I find my self feeling.  Letting go of issues that once mattered encourages me to believe that less is truly more.

Excused from a rigid routine, free floating through a sunny day, my mind relaxes and my spirit is calm.  Perception of life is easily broken down into small pieces for me, and I carefully review delicate ponderings.

Rumi speaks of broken vows and I am reminded of the many I have earnestly made to my self, only to allow them to lapse in the pursuit of another.  Being gentle with my self, I realize as I stretch, grow, and change, earnest vows cannot always be honored.  To remain rigid in the confines of previous thoughts does not lend it self to deeper understanding just waiting beyond the boundary.  Stepping through the many illusions all based in fear, I feel closer to Spirit and connected to all things in nature and beyond.

There is a freedom here, a pure sense of "no-thing-ness" as the water tickles my feet and the ocean seems to extend forever.  Last night's dream returns and I once again try to decipher the many layers of meaning.  There is a distinct message loitering just beyond my understanding.  I will continue to unearth the symbols unknown to me in hopes of making the message clear.

It is time to turn around and go back.  The sun shines in my face, and the ocean continues to play with my feet.  There is no more longing.  The yearning has stopped.  I am here, clearly present in the moment and I know I can ..."Come, Come again. Come."

Clean Slate

I live in my own little world.
But its ok, they know me here.
Lauren Myracle

Traveling by airplane is very stressful for me.  I am intimidated by going through screenings based on nothing but irrational fear.  I am always early and relieved to sit by the appropriate gate, hoping flights won't be canceled or delayed.  I never feel quite secure until I am finally strapped in my seat.  I have no fear of flying preferring the speed of take-off to the jolt of landing.

Arriving in Key West, descending the stairs of the airplane, anticipation spreads through my being.  I will go with the flow, follow a loosely structured day, welcoming every spontaneous event.  I will breathe in the warm air, soak up the sunshine, and delight in the diversity I find so endearing in this special place of mine.  I am much the same here, and I just blend in, being the observer of a life so different and carefree.  The creative energy surging through the art galleries, eateries, musicians, and kindred spirits seems to lift my spirits to a level where I can soar.

Our living quarters are quite small compared to our Illinois home, but they support the effort to live minimally without clutter and distraction.  I settle my clothes, find a place for my journals and lap top, and wander to the porch ... a perfect hideaway to use my iPad and dream.  In bare feet I walk through thick grass to the small heated pool and let my feet uncoil in the pleasure of the water in this small private garden of a yard.

This will be my home, although void of all my personal treasures ... family pictures, books, old journals and collections.  There is nothing but freedom here waiting for me.  No responsibilities or expectations or commitments.  Free to be a different me without associations, labels, or recognition.

This is an opportunity to begin a new beginning.  The slate is clean waiting for the newness of this authentic and  inspirational adventure.  Oh, I can hardly believe I have yet once again returned to my lovely Key West!

Completion Is Mine

There comes a time when the world gets quiet and the only thing left is your own heart.  So you'd better learn the sound of it.  Otherwise, you'll never understand what it's saying.

~Sara Dessen
 JUST LISTEN

Since Christmas Day, I have been cloistered, unplanned.  I have had numerous hours for contemplation and wide spaces in time for writing, but my physical weakness curtails my desire.  I have slept more hours than actually awake, and I have had many a journey into the depths of my soul.    When I find myself actually awake, I use the idol time to translate the images, symbols, and teachers who have visited my slumbers.

As I inventory myself, I find bits and pieces missing or out of place.  It is as though certain aspects of myself are not working quite as crisply as they had.  There is no time to loiter over a suspicious loss when magnificent doors have been thrown open into realms of  ancient past, current present, and the forever on going future.

There is great comfort in recalling the sound of the last piece of the puzzle sliding into place.  The "ah ha" moment when the entire world falls into peace, calm, love and order.  When all the senses align themselves opening the heart to embrace all that is ... and there is nothing but the presence of Divine Spirit intertwined in us all.

All else falls away and I feel transcended, a true light body; and yet I have gone no where.  I remain in the same place, surrounded by all that was there prior, but what is unnecessary turns translucent and shimmers away.  Sweet sounds of music tune my memories into revelations easily understood.  Completion is mine, and I am all I need to be.

Dreams are Puzzles

All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.

Edgar Allan Poe

We are told by Jonathan Parker that dreams revolve around several issues:

Wrong and Right
Attraction and Fears
Life and Death
Love and Hate
Masculine and Feminine
Freedom and Security

When we open our mind to dream interpretation we begin to develop an excellent resource for understanding our current life.   Whatever we experience throughout our day ... what we see, hear, touch, smell and speak ... becomes stored away  for possible use in our dreams.

A dream may be highly exaggerated to catch our attention and to make a point.  A drama might unfold within a dream where our current belief system is reflected.  Dream content is meant to expand our understanding whether it be for depth or laughter.  No matter who we dream about, the dream is always about our self.  The characters in our dream simply reflect an aspect about ourselves.  It is best to give dreams lots of room for interpretation.  Continue to examine our dream until we feel a connection with it and how it relates  to our life.

Once I had a dream that did not seem related to my life at all.  I studied it, turned it around, and shared it with a friend, but I could not find any personal meaning in it.  I recorded it in my dream journal and still it did not resonate with me.  I finally gave up, but a few days later when my friend asked about it, it unfolded itself ever so gently in my mind.  It made perfect sense!

Dreams are like puzzles.  Sometimes we have to keep moving the pieces around until they gently fit together.  Instead of just seeing a piece of the puzzle or small groupings, we eventually see the pieces forming the whole picture.

And, yes, we all dream every night.  It is a matter of whether or not you remember dreams.

Just Being Me

I bare my nakedness to the world
that the world may see who I am;
not the mask that hides my flaws,
not the mask that hides my beauty.
I bask in the light and I take off the mask!

Jocelyn Soriano

It is difficult for all of us to stand naked before the world.  For some it takes years of great courage while others are adventurers leading the way.  Then there are those who simply forget they are wearing a mask and therefore never disrobe.

Thinking back, I can remember how frightening it was to allow people to see the real me.  To be able to be the same person in private as well as in public, risking judgment and scorn.  And then when I became fully integrated, I experienced incredible freedom and joy with the prospect of just being me.

No matter where I went, there I was ... not wearing masks to fit particular occasions, and not cloaking values which would dishonor my spirit.  Instead of feeling vulnerable, I felt empowered.

In order to live fully in our own skin, we must articulate our silence, explore our inner landscapes, and decipher our dreams.  We must know ourselves thoroughly in order to present ourselves as in integrated human spirit.   There is nothing better than simply just being me!

Don't Compromise

Don't compromise yourself.
You are all you've got.

Janis Joplin

It is unfortunate in our early years that our uniqueness is seldom highlighted and often times squelched.  Our parents want us to 'fit in' and we are desperate to be accepted by others. We are so young and we begin to abbreviate or delete very valuable parts of our self.

We silence our voices, repress emotions, and restrict our selves from being fully comfortable in our own skin.  We sacrifice our personal needs, dreams, and desires to be secure in a group no matter how distorted our original self becomes.

When we have 'sold our soul' for the attention of others, we are no longer feeding our potential and we are starving our inner longings.  When we are starving our selves in this manner, we begin to 'stuff' our selves with food, alcohol, drugs, exercise or other compulsive behaviors.  Ultimately, we wander farther and farther away from who we truly are.

Awareness presents itself differently for each of us, but there is usually an echo of a whisper haunting us ... who am I?  In our own time, we eventually begin the long trek back to our authenticity.  Layer after layer of masks come off in the process of self-discovery.  We find our voice once again, and we reconnect with our heartfelt feelings, no longer numb or invisible in life.  We can recapture our dreams and use our gifts and talents to create a satisfying and original life.

Whatever you do, do not compromise your beautiful authentic self ... the price you will pay is just too high!

With Eyes Open

Can miles truly separate you from friends ...
If you want to be with someone you love,
aren't you already there?

Richard Bach

Today is one of those odd days where I feel unsettled inside of myself.  I woke up with some unknown emotion stirring within me, down in my belly.  I have a long list of things I would like to accomplish, but already I feel time slipping through my fingers.

I slept deeply, waking with a dream freshly imprinted upon my mind.  I was surrounded by friends as I recognized specific voices, but I could not open my eyes.  I desperately tried to lift my eyelids open, but to no avail.  I attempted to get them half-way open, but they were just too heavy.

I am left to ponder the meaning.  What am I not willing to see?  Why am I avoiding what is before me?  How can I embrace what is presented before me?

Journaling in search of answers, I discover my desire to control.  I see others at soul level and forget they are human as well.  I long for others to be in a joyful space of understanding the Divine and it is challenging for me to watch and not interfere.  Not wanting to turn away, perhaps I close my eyes.

As a parent, it was heart breaking, but necessary to stand back and watch a child struggle as they made their way along life's challenging path.  It is also difficult to observe friends learning their lessons.  I must be reminded, however, it is ego that gives me the false impression of having answers.  I am not called to interfere with someone else's path.  I do not need to resolve nor rescue any one.  I am simply expected to be present.

We must find our own unique way. With eyes open, we can be present for those around us, offering nothing but love, energy, and light.  By opening our hearts to each other without judgment or attempts to control, we simply remain present to witness each other's passage along life's mysterious way.

IT'S POSSIBLE by Antonio Machado

IT'S POSSIBLE

Antonio Machado

It's possible that while sleeping the hand
that sows the seeds of stars
started the ancient music going again

~like a note from a great harp~
and the frail wave came to our lips
as one or two honest words.

-Translated by Robert Bly

There is a movie entitled, PASSION OF THE HEART and it is one of my most favorite films.  It is about a woman who seeks out a therapist to help her separate between her living time and her dreaming time.  Both night time and day time are detailed realities and she has grown unconvinced that either is a dream.

In the one reality, she is living in France with her two young daughters.   They reside in a lovely old home in the sprawling countryside.  The three lazily wander to the market buying cheese and bread and enjoy every day together.   She is a writer and lives a tranquil life.

In the other reality, she is living a fast paced professional life in New York City.   She is a very stylish and successful woman selecting authors, books, and editors.  It is these scenes the audience tends to believe are dreams.

As the movie unfolds, the viewer gets pulled into the drama and soon begins to speculate which reality is true.  In the event this movie intrigues you, I will not carry the plot any further along.

The movie prompts one to speculate upon all of the time we spend sleeping.  Do we really just rest our bodies while bodily functions and complicated organs run their coarse?  Are we merely resting physically while our minds run away with our imaginations?

As one embraces varying spiritual beliefs, a great deal of thought can be spent speculating about 'dream time' and all it may really be.  As science continues to unveil the complexities of the universe, more questions challenge our original belief systems.

For centuries information received during 'dream time' has been documented ... premonitions, inventions, mathematical equations, inspiration, musical masterpieces, and artistic designs to mention only a few.   Who knows, maybe 'dream time' is just one big think tank!

DUST by Dorianne Laux

DUST
Dorianne Laux

Someone spoke to me last night,
told me the truth.  Just a few words,
but I recognized it.
I knew I should make myself get up,
write it down, but it was late,
and I was exhausted from working
all day in the garden, moving rocks.
Now, I remember only the flavor ~
not like food, sweet or sharp.
More like a fine powder, like dust.
And I wasn't elated or frightened,
but simply rapt, aware.
That's how it is sometimes ~
God comes to your window,
all bright light and black wings,
and you're just too tired to open it.

Edited by Roger Housden

Throughout history, men and women have been receiving nocturnal artistic expressions and insights.  It can be a voice, an image, or a sound that prompts the growth of seedlings, if we but remember to water the soil.

Upon awakening, the memory floats closely by, but by the time we brush our teeth, only fragments remain.  Try as hard as we will, the connecting dots elude us.

We all experience times when we are busily about our day when someone mentions the smallest thing and it triggers the vague memory of something we had just dreamed that very morning.  Slowly, bits and pieces return to our memory.

Today we are offered texting, tweeting, face booking, emailing, and long distance calling.  For me, the night time communication laced within our dreams is my favorite form of all.
